Aggrieved teachers from Ghana’s Colleges of Education have suspended a protest at the headquarters of the Ghana Education Service (GES) following official assurances that long-delayed salary payments will be processed by the end of July.
The teachers, who completed their training in 2022, began picketing on Monday, June 23, demanding clarity on months of unpaid salaries and the prolonged delay in the issuance of staff identification numbers—requirements for placement on the government payroll.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News, group spokesperson Eric Darfuor said the demonstration was halted after representatives from GES provided verbal commitments that the issue was in its final stages of resolution.
“We were informed by the GES Public Relations Officer that an official communiqué has been issued and that payments will begin by the end of July,” Mr. Darfuor said. “Based on that, we’ve decided to suspend our picketing temporarily.”
The GES has not yet publicly disclosed the reasons behind the delayed compensation or provided details on the number of teachers affected. However, the agency reportedly assured the group that administrative bottlenecks were being cleared.
The group emphasized it would continue to closely monitor developments and warned it would resume protest actions should the GES fail to deliver on its timeline.
“We are waiting, and if nothing happens by the end of July, we will return — this time stronger,” Mr. Darfuor added.
