A dramatic scene unfolded during the vetting of Attorney General-designate Dr. Dominic Ayine on Monday, January 13, when Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin stormed out of a Parliament Appointment Committee session. The controversy was sparked by a question from Suame MP John Darko, who sought to revisit a potential conflict of interest involving Dr. Ayine’s law firm.

Though the Committee Chairman, Bernard Ahiafor, believed the matter had already been addressed, Darko insisted on revisiting the issue, prompting a tense standoff. The Chairman ruled the question out of order, a decision that ignited a heated exchange between Darko and the committee leadership.

Darko accused Ahiafor of unfairly suppressing his question, and the Ranking Member, Afenyo-Markin, quickly sided with him. “Chairman, with the greatest respect, I have observed consistently the way you go at my members, especially the young ones, the new ones, it’s not the right way,” Afenyo-Markin remarked. He went on to voice his concern over what he described as biased treatment of NPP members.

Despite Afenyo-Markin’s protest, Ahiafor stood firm, refusing to reverse his decision. Frustrated by the unfolding tension, the Minority Leader walked out of the session in protest, with several NPP members following suit.

The walkout marks the latest flashpoint in a bitterly divided parliamentary vetting process, as both sides continue to clash over procedural issues and questions of fairness.
