A fire has destroyed a textile shop at Lapaz Market in Accra, leaving a young woman hospitalised after collapsing at the scene.

The blaze broke out on the top floor of a building on Sunday, 27 April, and quickly consumed bedding materials and merchandise valued at millions of Ghanaian cedis.

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in Abelenkpe arrived promptly and managed to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby shops.

The victim, who co-owns the business with her mother, was reportedly overwhelmed upon seeing the devastation and was taken to Lapaz Community Hospital for treatment.

Her mother told reporters she was on the ground floor of the building when her grandchild raised the alarm.

Speaking to Channel One News, ADO I Emmanuel Akwetey, Operations Officer with the GNFS, said the cause of the fire remains unknown. He confirmed that an investigation is underway.

“Our team acted quickly to stop the fire from reaching adjoining shops. Investigations are still ongoing, and at the appropriate time, the owner will be invited to our station for a formal report,” he said.

No other injuries have been reported.
