The John Mahama transition team has rejected President Akufo-Addo’s assertion that Ghana has returned to its pre-COVID economic growth trajectory.

In a speech on Wednesday at the inauguration of the joint transition team, President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence that the economy had fully recovered to its state during his first term in office.

However, the transition team, led by spokesperson Felix Ofosu Kwakye, disagrees, pointing to ongoing economic challenges. “The facts are glaring; we are nowhere near the pre-COVID era, and we do not accept COVID as an excuse for the current economic situation,” Ofosu Kwakye said.

He criticized the President’s claims, saying it was unrealistic to suggest that the country had overcome its economic problems. “High inflation, a steep exchange rate, struggling businesses, and widespread hardship are still prevalent,” he added.

Ofosu Kwakye emphasized that the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government was prepared to confront the nation’s economic difficulties, acknowledging the challenges ahead. “We know we are inheriting a shattered economy with finances in disarray. It will take real hard work to lift us out of the doldrums,” he said.
