Transparency International Ghana has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take firm action following widespread criticism of a cash gift from a senior government official to controversial evangelist Nana Agradaa.

In a video that has since gone viral on social media, Sammy Gyamfi, Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, is seen handing over what appears to be US dollars to Patricia Oduro Koranteng, known publicly as Nana Agradaa. The footage has sparked debate among Ghanaians, raising questions over ethics and the conduct of public officials.

Speaking to Channel One TV on Sunday, May 11, the Executive Director of Transparency International Ghana, Mary Awelana Addah, said the incident should serve as a test case for the President’s commitment to promoting ethical leadership.

“I believe that certainly, this is an opportunity for the President to demonstrate above and beyond that he means business by putting in place this Code of Conduct,” she said.

Ms Addah also called for the swift passage of the Conduct of Public Officers Bill, which she said would help criminalise unethical behaviour and set out clear standards for those in public office.

“In this instance, if you go to even the Code of Conduct, you do not see a lot of punitive measures that would be in place to support whatever it is that this gentleman has been cited for,” she added.

She urged President Mahama to go beyond symbolic gestures, and instead take decisive steps, such as issuing a strong warning to public servants who have yet to declare their assets.

“That, for me, shows commitment, not just something for the optics,” Ms Addah concluded.
