Ghana’s Commercial Transport Operators group has criticized a decision by the National Road Safety Authority to ban the use of Toyota Voxy vehicles for long-distance commercial travel, calling the move misguided and economically harmful.

In a statement dated April 8, the group said the regulator’s directive amounted to a “lazy and ill-conceived” response to road safety concerns and urged authorities to reconsider.

Rather than imposing a blanket restriction, the operators argued, regulators should prioritize driver education and targeted interventions. They described the Toyota Voxy as a widely used and dependable vehicle in the commercial transport sector, warning that the ban could disrupt livelihoods and place financial strain on many households.

The group called on the NRSA to engage industry stakeholders, implement safety measures in high-risk areas, and address underlying causes of road accidents, including poor road infrastructure. It also urged increased investment in driver training and safety awareness programs.

The statement, signed by National Chairman Asonaba Nana Wiredu, said the decision reflected a lack of understanding of the sector and pledged opposition to the directive.
