The U.S. Embassy in Ghana says it issued 25,000 visas in 2024—less than half of the 61,000 applications it received.
The update came during a Consular Media Day event held on May 9, 2025, aimed at shedding light on the often-confusing visa process and encouraging legal travel to the United States.
Speaking to reporters, Consular General Elliot Fertik emphasized that while the U.S. continues to welcome Ghanaians interested in studying, working, or doing business in the country, it has a firm stance on immigration law.
“We continue to welcome visitors from Ghana,” Fertik said, “but visa applicants or holders must follow our laws.” He didn’t mince words when it came to consequences, warning that anyone found engaging in illegal activities risks visa refusal, revocation—or even permanent bans.
“The U.S. has zero tolerance for illegal immigration,” he added.
The Embassy says it’s working to make the visa process more transparent and user-friendly, especially as many Ghanaians continue to seek opportunities in America.
“We want to ensure that Ghanaians understand the proper way to apply for visas and what’s expected of them,” Fertik said, pointing to recent improvements in the customer experience.
The message was clear: Legal travel is welcome, but breaking the rules isn’t worth the risk.
“While we aim to facilitate legal travel,” Fertik said, “we also have a responsibility to protect our borders and enforce the law.”
