The University of Ghana has suspended all social gatherings on its main campus in response to a renewed surge in COVID-19 cases, signaling a return to stricter health protocols as the country faces a potential new wave of infections.
The directive, issued Wednesday in a formal notice signed by Professor Rosina I. Kyerematen, Dean of Student Affairs, applies immediately to all student-led events and organizations, including the Student Representative Council (SRC), Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), and academic departmental groups
.

“Due to the resurgence of COVID-19 cases on the University of Ghana campus, it has become necessary to suspend all social gatherings with immediate effect,” the statement read.
All scheduled events, including week celebrations and association activities, are on hold until further notice. The Office of Student Affairs emphasized that the move is a precautionary measure intended to protect the health of students, faculty, and staff.
The announcement was circulated broadly, with copies sent to key university officials, including the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Director of Public Affairs, Director of Safety and Security Services, hall authorities, hostel managers, senior tutors, and patrons of student clubs.
The suspension marks a shift back to heightened vigilance for Ghana’s largest and oldest public university, which had resumed near-normal campus life in recent months. University authorities are urging full compliance from student leaders and campus groups as they monitor the evolving health situation.
The development reflects broader public health concerns in Ghana, where officials are increasingly wary of localized COVID-19 spikes and the potential need for tighter restrictions.
