Senior staff at public universities in Ghana have ended their nationwide strike following assurances from the government to implement a long-delayed agreement.
The Senior Staff Association–Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), along with the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), had embarked on an indefinite strike on Wednesday, 21 May. The industrial action was in response to the government’s failure to honour an agreement signed six months ago.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 22 May, the unions announced that members would return to work on Friday, 23 May, after the Ministry of Finance released the official authorisation for the agreement’s implementation, which is set to take effect from November 2024.

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has also instructed universities to begin processing payments immediately.
“Following our collective action and strong advocacy, the government has responded positively to our demands,” the statement said.
The union expressed gratitude to Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu and GTEC Director-General Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai for their roles in resolving the dispute.
