Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe and a member of the ministerial vetting committee, has expressed deep sorrow and frustration over the violent altercation that occurred in Parliament during the ministerial vetting on January 31, 2024.
Speaking in an emotional interview on Joy Prime’s Mr. Shaib described the incident as “regrettable and unfortunate” and criticized the exaggerated portrayal of the events, which he believes have unfairly damaged his reputation. The MP stated that the incident left him deeply hurt and that it took the intervention of his wife, mother, and constituents to calm him down.
“I am not a violent person,” Mr.Shaib said, emphasizing that he has never resorted to physical confrontation in his political career. However, he explained that he was forced to defend himself after members of the opposition, specifically from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), physically provoked him. According to Shaib, NDC MPs attempted to push a table into his lower body, particularly around his scrotum, leading to his reaction.
Mr.Shaib, specifically named Charles Asiedu, the son of NDC National Chairman Asiedu Nketia, as one of the individuals involved. He pointed out that the altercation was captured on a viral video that has circulated widely.
The MP expressed deep disappointment with how he has been treated following the incident, particularly in regard to the lack of a fair hearing when decisions were made. “I feel very sad and pained because I was wrongfully accused,” he said. “If nothing at all, I was one of the people going around trying to calm tempers when tensions were rising.”
Despite his frustration, Shaib expressed regret over the situation and called for truth and fairness in the reporting of political events. He urged the public to look beyond the propaganda and consider the full context of the altercation.
The chaos in Parliament on January 31 has sparked widespread debate, with many calling for greater discipline among lawmakers. While some have called for Shaib to apologize, the MP insists that the narrative surrounding the incident has been unfairly skewed against him.
