Araba Biesema Crentsil, founder and CEO of the Queen of Ghana Pageant, has urged Ghanaians to support women vying for political appointments and leadership roles in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Crentsil’s call highlights four key pillars of women’s empowerment: economic, social, political, and psychological. She stressed the importance of increased female inclusion in Ghana’s political landscape, emphasizing that this would create a more inclusive future for women and girls in the country.

“We must ensure greater women’s participation in our political processes, which is crucial for national progress,” Crentsil said. “Political empowerment is a vital component of this, as women’s involvement in decision-making leads to better representation of their needs and stronger accountability.”

Crentsil pointed out that studies show a higher number of women in parliament can lead to greater attention to issues affecting women. She argued that women’s political participation is not only a matter of gender equality but also essential for a genuine democracy.

“Political accountability to women begins with increasing their representation in decision-making positions,” she continued. “However, this must be followed by gender-sensitive governance reforms to ensure that elected officials actively promote gender equality in public policy.”

She added that while equal representation in parliament is a necessary step, true gender-sensitive policymaking requires that women hold influential positions in the legislative process, shaping the direction of national governance.

The Queen of Ghana Pageant, founded by Crentsil, is a pioneering initiative designed to empower women to assume leadership roles globally. Beyond celebrating beauty, the pageant serves as a call to action for women to claim their rightful place in politics, governance, and other spheres of influence.

Crentsil’s “Women for Leadership and Governance Campaign” is part of a broader effort to inspire women to take on leadership roles and ensure gender equality in decision-making at all levels of society.
