Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that any votes cast for Akua Donkor, the presidential candidate for the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), in the December elections will be invalid.
Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, made the announcement during an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, 16 November.
He explained that while Akua Donkor’s name and image will appear on the presidential ballot, votes in her favor will not count.
“Currently, we have 12 candidates on the ballot. However, any vote for Akua Donkor will be annulled. It is not possible for her to win,” Dr. Asare said.
The announcement follows the disqualification of Philip Appiah Kubi, another GFP candidate. Dr. Asare stated that Akua Donkor’s inclusion on the ballot is procedural, as the printing of presidential ballots is almost complete.
EC Chairperson Jean Mensa also addressed the matter during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on 12 November. She confirmed that the ballot order would remain unchanged to avoid delays, with 90% of the printing process already finalized.
The EC says it is intensifying public education to ensure voters understand the situation and to minimize invalid ballots.
