Voting has officially concluded in Ghana’s 2024 general elections, with the counting of votes now underway at polling stations across the country. The Electoral Commission has provided regular updates to the public, keeping them informed on the progress of the process.
However, the election has been marred by several incidents, including reports of violence, arrests, and allegations of misconduct. Tensions between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) escalated in some areas, leading to confrontations and accusations of electoral malpractice.
One notable incident occurred in the Obuasi East constituency, where a clash broke out between the NDC Communications Officer and military personnel. The NDC official allegedly assaulted two soldiers when they attempted to visit a polling station.
There have also been reports of ballot stuffing and vote-buying in various regions. In the Northern Region, four individuals were arrested in connection with a fatal shooting at Nyankpala, which left one person dead and another injured. The suspects, identified as Majid Issah, Fodi Issiage Kamara, Yakubu Simalia, and Alhaji Bashiru Mohamed, have been taken into custody by the Ghana Police Service.
Meanwhile, a disturbance occurred at the St. Theresa’s School polling station in the Okaikwei South constituency, when a group, allegedly linked to the NPP, was found in possession of what were suspected to be fake ballots. The situation caused confusion and disrupted the voting process.
The Electoral Commission has yet to comment on the incidents, and the situation remains tense as the counting continues.
