At least 14 individuals have been arrested across Ghana in connection with widespread malpractice during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), according to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
Those detained include students, teachers, invigilators, and school proprietors. Arrests were made at several examination centres, including Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College in Asante Bekwai, and Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian SHS.
WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, told reporters the number of arrests is expected to rise as investigations continue. He warned that results from all implicated schools will undergo heightened scrutiny.
One of the most serious breaches occurred at Adventist Day Senior High School in Kumasi, where multiple mobile phones were confiscated. The centre has since been shut down, and affected candidates have been relocated to WAEC’s regional office to complete their exams.
In a separate incident in Kasoa, two impersonators were sentenced to six months in prison each, while an accomplice received an eight-month jail term. Elsewhere, the proprietor of Christian School in Kukurantumi and a teacher were arrested for allegedly operating a WhatsApp group used to circulate exam questions.
Meanwhile, in Abura Dunkwa, a man identified as Ebenazer Fynn was apprehended for impersonation and is under further investigation.
Mr Kapi said the examination body is committed to upholding the integrity of the exams and will not hesitate to impose severe penalties on those involved in malpractice.
