Several Kumawood movie stars have defended their support for President-elect John Mahama in the recent Ghanaian elections, insisting their campaign efforts were motivated by a desire for positive change in the country, rather than personal benefit.

Appearing on Daybreak Hitz on Friday, December 13, 2024, actors Christiana Awuni, Big Akwess, and Okomfo Kolege shared their reasons for opposing the Akufo-Addo administration. They expressed frustration over the unfulfilled promises made to address the challenges facing the country’s film industry.

“We did this for Ghana, not for selfish gains,” Awuni stated, wearing NDC paraphernalia in celebration of Mahama’s victory. She emphasized that their involvement in the campaign was aimed at advocating for better support for the creative arts industry, which they argue goes beyond entertainment and plays a crucial role in national development.

Awuni’s sentiments were echoed by Big Akwess, who recounted a meeting in 2015 where President Akufo-Addo, then in opposition, had pledged to tackle the industry’s issues. The actor outlined three key promises made by Akufo-Addo’s government that remained unfulfilled: the establishment of a film industry with cinemas, the passage of a bill to regulate the dominance of foreign telenovelas, and the creation of a film village to support local talent.

“He has frustrated us. He said it and never did it,” Big Akwess lamented, adding that they had shared these concerns with Mahama and were hopeful for progress under his leadership.

Okomfo Kolege, another prominent actor, expressed optimism that Mahama would continue the initiatives he started to support the creative arts sector. “I pray Mahama will continue the good works he was doing for the creative arts industry so we boom as we should,” he said.

The stars’ remarks highlight ongoing tensions in Ghana’s creative sector, as many in the industry feel their concerns have been overlooked by the current administration. The actors’ campaign for Mahama underscores their belief in the potential of the NDC to bring about the changes they have long advocated for.
