Ghana’s Education Minister-designate, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government will refund admission fees for first-year students enrolled in public tertiary institutions. The move is part of President John Mahama’s initiative to make higher education more accessible to students across the country.
Speaking before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 20, Iddrisu outlined that GH¢345 million would be allocated to cover the admission fees for students pursuing general programs, excluding professional courses such as medicine. The funds will be included in the government’s Reset Budget, subject to approval by the Minister of Finance-designate, Ato Forson.
The refund initiative aligns with a promise made in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto during the 2024 election campaign. Iddrisu assured that students who had already paid their admission fees would be included in the refund program.
“This is a model we will test. If successful, it may be expanded,” Iddrisu stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving access to education, particularly for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
