Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate for Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC), has underscored the vital contribution of women to the country’s socio-economic growth, calling for greater support and collaboration to address systemic barriers.
Speaking at a women’s empowerment forum on Monday, 18 November, at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang delivered a keynote address on the theme: Advancing Gender Equality: A National Dialogue on Current Policies and Innovative Measures for Local and National Impact.
She highlighted the significant progress made by women in Ghana but stressed that persistent societal prejudices and inadequate support systems continue to hinder their full potential.
“When others focus on our personal lives rather than our achievements, it’s a sign they have no valid argument,” she said. “We should not be afraid; we must collaborate because when women work, the country works.”
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang added that women’s success has a ripple effect on society, driving progress for families and the nation as a whole.
“Women’s achievements benefit our children and help the country move forward. Petty divisions hold us back, and we must rise above them,” she remarked.
Addressing stereotypes, she dismissed questions often posed about women’s personal lives, such as their ability to balance leadership roles with family responsibilities.
“Let’s remind them that being a wife or mother is not a job requirement,” she stated, urging women to remain steadfast in their pursuits despite societal expectations.
The event brought together women leaders and advocates to discuss policies and strategies to advance gender equality in Ghana.
