Yusif Sulemana,  Deputy Minister-designate for Lands and Natural Resources, has vowed to remove illegal miners from the country’s water bodies, a move aimed at addressing the growing environmental crisis.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee on February 26, 2025, Mr. Sulemana condemned the escalating damage caused by illegal mining activities, which have severely impacted the nation’s water resources. He stressed the urgency of protecting these vital water bodies, warning of the severe risks posed to both the environment and public health.

“This is a national issue, and if you were to witness the destruction of our water bodies firsthand, you would be moved to act,” Sulemana said. “I will work closely with my minister to ensure that those operating on our water bodies are removed.”

Mr. Sulemana’s comments came amid a recent operation by the Western Regional Police Command, which on February 22, 2025, seized 10 excavators and arrested several illegal mining operatives, including both Ghanaians and foreign nationals. Among those apprehended were Chinese nationals, who were found operating in the Ankobra River in the Evalue Ajomoro-Gwira District. A total of 15 people were arrested, including seven expatriates.

The government’s crackdown on illegal mining is part of an ongoing effort to combat the widespread environmental damage caused by the unregulated mining sector.
