Accra is set to host the much-anticipated African Festival this December, a vibrant three-day celebration of African culture, arts, and music aimed at raising awareness about climate change. The event will be held at the Accra International Conference Centre, beginning on Saturday, December 28, 2024.
The festival’s headline artist will be renowned African musician Yvonne Chaka Chaka, with performances also featuring Grammy-nominated Rocky Dawuni, Musiga President Bisa Simons, and Okyeame Kwame. The event’s theme, “Kinako! Feel Africa, Be the Change,” seeks to inspire collective action toward environmental sustainability and highlight the urgent need to address climate change across the continent.
Founded by Latif Abubakar, the African Festival aims to be the largest Pan-African gathering, using arts and culture as a platform to promote climate action. The festival will showcase a variety of performances, from theatre to music, and celebrate Africa’s diverse heritage. This year’s edition, dubbed “The Climate Change Edition,” will emphasize the role of traditional African ecological knowledge in combating modern environmental challenges.
One of the key highlights will be two plays written by Abubakar, “Don Quixote Africa,” an African retelling of the classic European novel, and “Ghana Must Go,” a comedic exploration of Ghana’s rich cultural heritage. The festival will also feature a concert, The Afro Night Music Concert, fronted by Chaka Chaka, alongside other top African musicians advocating for climate awareness.
In addition to performances, the festival will offer a range of immersive experiences, including The Den of History—an outdoor film festival and storytelling space—and The African Food Festival, which will showcase plant-based and eco-friendly African cuisines. Iconic African structures, such as the Pyramid of Giza, the Larabanga Mosque, and Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah Museum, will also be on display.
Children and family-friendly activities will be featured, with a focus on fostering environmental consciousness among younger generations. Tickets are available for GHC250 per day or GHC600 for the full event.
The African Festival is organized by Globe Productions Limited, in partnership with the African Women and Children’s Conference (AFRIWOCC), Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC), and supported by Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Graphic Communications Group Ltd, and Media General Group.
