Greater Accra’s newly appointed Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has unveiled an ambitious plan to boost environmental sanitation in the region by reintroducing National Sanitation Day and launching a Cleanest City Award.

Speaking on her first day in office, Ocloo shared that the region will now observe a Regional Sanitation Day on the last Friday of every month, aligning with the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s “Clean Up Ghana” initiative. This new initiative aims to foster a competitive spirit and a more responsible approach to waste management across Greater Accra.

Ocloo emphasized that waste management and sanitation would be a key focus for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), with their performance being evaluated based on improvements in these areas. She also outlined plans to implement a comprehensive sanitation policy that will encourage waste segregation, provide garbage bags and bins for public places and homes, and enhance the capacity of local sanitation departments.

In addition, the Minister pledged to intensify efforts to educate citizens on proper sanitation practices through social and behavioral change campaigns. She also announced plans to strengthen local governance, emphasizing collaboration with traditional authorities, religious groups, and other stakeholders to support decentralization.

On the security front, Ocloo, who also chairs the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), assured that she would work closely with security agencies to maintain peace and order. She also highlighted plans to improve street lighting across the region to enhance visibility and reduce crime.

Turning to economic development, Ocloo expressed a strong commitment to supporting women entrepreneurs. She revealed plans to collaborate with the Women’s Bank to promote women-owned businesses and foster innovation. Additionally, Ocloo mentioned her intention to organize trade fairs in partnership with organizations like the Ghana Tourism Authority, the Ministry of Trade, and the Department of Agriculture to boost local trade.

In her closing remarks, Ocloo called on civil society, the private sector, and the media to join forces with her administration to transform Greater Accra into a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous region. She expressed confidence that, with collective effort, the region would achieve lasting positive change.
