A major rescue operation was underway Sunday after a building collapsed in the Avenor area of North Kaneshie, Accra, leaving one person in critical condition and raising fears that others remain trapped beneath the rubble.
The structure, located opposite the Ashfoam showroom and adjacent to Melcom Plus, is believed to have been a residential building that also housed a mosque. Preliminary information indicates the building was still under construction when it gave way.
The Ghana National Fire Service said firefighters from the Circle Fire Station and its national headquarters were dispatched to the scene shortly after the incident to begin search-and-rescue efforts.
Two people have been pulled from the debris and transported to hospital for treatment, according to the fire service. One of the victims was reported to be in critical condition.
Rescue personnel believe at least one or two additional individuals may still be trapped under the collapsed structure. The service’s Director of Operations is leading the emergency response, while heavy machinery has been deployed to assist crews in accessing areas buried beneath the wreckage.
Firefighters and other emergency responders continued rescue efforts late Sunday as authorities worked to determine the cause of the collapse.
