Traditional leaders from the Anlo Kingdom in Ghana’s Volta Region have given the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, a five-day deadline to identify the Member of Parliament (MP) responsible for a verbal attack on Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, the Klottey-Korle MP.

In a formal petition submitted to the Speaker and two other MPs initially suspected of the outburst, the chiefs have demanded clarity by February 10, 2025. The identification of the MP will guide their next steps in addressing the incident, they stated.

The controversial incident took place on February 4, 2025, during parliamentary proceedings when a male voice could be heard shouting, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down! Daughter of a murderer, sit down!” This occurred as Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin was speaking, seeking calm amidst contentious discussions about the 60th anniversary of the death of Joseph Boakye Danquah.

Zanetor Rawlings, the eldest daughter of Ghana’s former president Jerry John Rawlings, is no stranger to the country’s political spotlight, with her father having served as both military leader and later civilian president.

The Anlo chiefs’ petition underscores their intent to hold the responsible party accountable, adding further tension to an already heated moment in Ghana’s parliament.
