Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister for Foreign Affairs, has alleged that he was the primary target of the unrest that unfolded during the ministerial vetting in Parliament.
In a statement before the special committee investigating the disturbances, Ablakwa detailed how tensions escalated immediately after he entered the vetting room. Describing the scene as one of “violence” and “destruction of property,” he said, “As soon as I entered, I was greeted with hostilities. It was clear to me that I was the target. They did not want to have me vetted that day.”
Ablakwa suggested that the vetting process was deliberately manipulated to delay or obstruct his appearance before the committee. He noted that other nominees, including Joseph Bukari Nikpe, who was scheduled to appear after him, were instead vetted ahead without incident.
Furthermore, he highlighted the unexpected vetting of Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the nominee for the Health Ministry, whose original vetting date was set for January 31 but was moved forward without prior notice. “Nobody gave me any information. Even Hon. Akandoh, who was supposed to appear before me, has confirmed he was called to appear earlier than scheduled,” he explained.
Ablakwa’s statements have added to growing concerns about the fairness and transparency of the parliamentary vetting process.
