An engineer was injured by stray bullets after customs officers opened fire on an uncustomed vehicle attempting to evade arrest in Sogakope on the night of February 19, 2025.

The incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. when officers pursued a Mercedes-Benz with registration number GC 3361-14. The vehicle was reportedly being chased when customs officers fired shots, hitting the rear windshield.

In the chaos, Alex, an engineer with the South Tongu District Assembly, was struck by two stray bullets.

Eyewitnesses said he was waiting by the roadside to board a vehicle to Accra when he was injured. He was immediately taken to Comboni Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for his injuries.

The authorities have not yet issued a statement regarding the incident, but witnesses confirmed that the customs officers eventually arrested the uncustomed vehicle they had been pursuing. “A pickup was chasing the car, then we heard gunshots. The man, who was standing by the roadside, was hit,” one witness shared with Citi News.

The incident has raised concerns over the safety and conduct of customs officers during enforcement operations.
