Kwame Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways, has launched a 5-member committee tasked with reviewing the country’s Axle Load Control Programme in an effort to boost its effectiveness and efficiency.

The newly formed committee includes representatives from National Security, Private Haulage Operators, the Ghana Highway Authority, the Ministry of Transport, and the Ghana Standards Authority. Together, they will focus on identifying systemic and operational issues, addressing violations of regulatory provisions, and evaluating the management of fines collected from offenders.

Overloading of heavy cargo vehicles has been identified as a key cause of premature road deterioration and an increase in traffic accidents. With these concerns in mind, the Ministry is committed to overhauling the Axle Load Control Programme, which has faced several operational challenges.

The Ministry reassured the public that improving road safety and tackling overloading will be a priority, ensuring that road infrastructure lasts longer and functions as intended.
