President John Dramani Mahama has criticized the Agenda 111 hospital project, calling it a “knee-jerk reaction” to public outrage over stalled hospital projects under the previous administration.

Speaking during his State of the Nation Address in Parliament, Mahama revealed that despite $400 million being disbursed, not a single hospital under the program is operational.

“Mr. Speaker, I challenge you— in any part of Ghana, not one is operational,” he declared.

The President lamented the lack of a dedicated funding source for the project, arguing that the funds should have been focused on completing fewer hospitals rather than spreading resources too thin.

“At a rate of approximately $80 million per hospital, the $400 million spent could have completed and made operational at least 22 hospitals,” he stated.

To salvage the situation, Mahama announced that he has directed the Minister for Health to present a clear plan for the way forward. He also signaled openness to public-private partnerships and franchising to ensure the hospitals are completed and put to use.
