In a candid assessment of Ghana’s economic difficulties, President John Dramani Mahama told Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025, that the country is facing a severe crisis, marked by widespread hardship and mounting fiscal challenges.
“I am sad to report that the state of our nation is not good,” Mahama said during his first State of the Nation Address of his second term, highlighting the gravity of the economic situation. His comments come at a time of growing concern over the country’s financial stability and the impact of past debt restructuring measures.
The president outlined key steps aimed at addressing the crisis, including the upcoming National Economic Dialogue on March 3rd and 4th, which is expected to provide a comprehensive overview of the nation’s economic challenges. Additionally, the Finance Minister’s budget presentation on March 11th will offer further insight into the government’s fiscal strategy.
Despite the daunting situation, Mahama stressed his resolve to confront the crisis directly, rejecting any notion of avoiding responsibility. “It is not my style to lament and shift blame when confronted with challenges,” he told lawmakers. “I have therefore not come here to lament on the state of our country, though there is much to lament about.”
President Mahama’s remarks reflect his determination to address Ghana’s fiscal woes head-on, reaffirming his commitment to navigating the nation through the difficult period and toward long-term economic recovery.
