President John Dramani Mahama has explained that the country’s poor economic situation influenced his decision to scale down this year’s Independence Day celebration.

Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebration was moved from the usual Black Star Square to the Jubilee House as a way of cutting costs.

Speaking at the event, President Mahama revealed that the decision cut 95% of the estimated GHC 20 million expenditure, a significant reduction compared to the GHC 15 million spent on last year’s celebrations in Koforidua.

“This scaled-back celebration is a reflection of our economic realities,” Mahama stated, emphasizing the need for prudent financial management in challenging times.

The move has been widely discussed, with many praising the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline while ensuring that the significance of Independence Day is not lost.

Despite the modest nature of the event, the celebration maintained its patriotic essence, reminding Ghanaians of the sacrifices of the past and the resilience needed for the future.
