A 24-year-old mobile money vendor, known only as “Junior,” was found murdered in his one-room apartment at Kwadaso, in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, following an apparent robbery. Authorities report that the assailants, still unidentified, made off with an undisclosed sum of money after the attack.
The victim, who operated his MoMo business at the Kwadaso Onion Market, was discovered in a pool of blood inside his room. Neighbors said Junior had returned home on Saturday night with a significant amount of cash, which they suspect may have made him a target for the robbers. “He often came home with large sums of money after work,” one neighbor noted. “That could have attracted the attention of the attackers.”
The police have initiated an investigation into the incident, but no arrests have been made at this time. This killing follows a similar tragedy last month, when a 27-year-old mobile money vendor, Patricia Nimako, was shot dead by armed robbers in Kumasi. The assailants reportedly took ten thousand Ghana cedis and several mobile phones from the victim.
Authorities are under increasing pressure to address the growing number of violent crimes targeting mobile money vendors in the region.
