Former Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam has sharply refuted claims made by the current government that his administration had introduced the controversial betting tax.

In response to Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson’s announcement in the 2025 Budget, which included the abolition of several taxes among them, the Betting Tax,Mr. Adam vehemently denied that the tax had ever been collected under his watch.

Speaking at a press conference hosted by the Minority, Mr. Adam described the assertion as “unconscionable,” stating, “The betting tax that they said they have abolished, we never collected. So, to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something that you have not implemented is to deceive the people of Ghana.”

The betting tax, which was introduced by the previous government, aimed to impose a 10% withholding tax on winnings from sports betting and lottery. The move faced considerable backlash from both industry players and the public. However, Adam insists that his administration never enforced the policy, despite it being part of the earlier tax plans.

In his critique, Mr. Adam suggests that the current government’s messaging is misleading and could confuse the public regarding the actual implementation of the tax.
