Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused National Security operatives of stealing valuables, including cash and jewellery, during a raid on the home of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, on Wednesday, March 19.

Afenyo-Markin claims that operatives, led by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, took an undisclosed sum of money from Dr. Addison’s bedroom. He also alleges that jewellery, including earrings and necklaces belonging to Dr. Addison’s wife, was stolen during the operation.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, March 20, Mr. Afenyo-Markin condemned the raid as unlawful and an abuse of power, calling on President John Mahama to take swift action against those responsible. “Some GHC 10,000 on his bed could not be found… these operatives, some of whom are hungry party foot soldiers, appear to be using their positions to steal,” he said.

The raid, which took place at Dr. Addison’s private residence in Accra’s Roman Ridge neighbourhood, has raised concerns about the conduct of security forces under the current administration. Eyewitnesses reported that heavily armed officers, some wearing balaclavas and carrying AK-47 rifles, disabled the CCTV system before conducting a search of the property.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin also drew attention to a similar raid on the home of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta in February 2025, warning that these incidents could signal a troubling trend of political persecution. He has called on civil society and human rights groups to condemn such actions.

As of now, the government and the National Security Secretariat have not commented on the allegations. Calls for an independent investigation into the incident are growing.
