The retrial of Gregory Afoko, who is accused of conspiring with Asabke Alamdi to murder Adams Mahama, the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been adjourned until May 30. The delay follows a revelation from the presiding judge, Marie-Louise Simmons, that the prosecution is still awaiting guidance from the Attorney-General on how to proceed with the case.
Afoko, who has been out on a GHC500,000 bail after spending nearly a decade in remand, maintained his innocence outside the courtroom. “I’m happy I’ve gotten bail and I’m with my family now. From the onset, I’ve not committed any crime, but they kept holding me for all these years—10 years,” he said, expressing his relief and frustration.
Gregory’s older brother, Paul Afoko, a former National Chairman of the NPP, voiced his hope for an expedited resolution. “Who wouldn’t hope that justice is done? Ten years? Even if he had been convicted of manslaughter, he would have served his sentence and been free by now,” Paul remarked. “We don’t know what will happen, but we just pray that justice is done expeditiously.”
The case remains in legal limbo as the Attorney-General’s office determines the next steps.
