The Western Regional Office of Ghana’s National Security has discovered a stash of electrical materials in an operation conducted at Kansawurodo, a suburb of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis. The materials, believed to be linked to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), were found hidden in an uncompleted building and a suspected hideout.

The operation, prompted by a tip-off, led to the seizure of several valuable electrical components, including 46 cable drums, electrical switches, meters, meter cases, and various iron angle bars. These items are suspected to be the property of ECG.

Hashim Torkonu, a National Security operative who led the operation, told Channel One News on April 7 that two individuals were taken into custody for questioning. He indicated that the location of the seized materials and the nature of the items raised suspicions that they could be part of the missing ECG stock.

“The items found here differ from those previously uncovered in a private residence linked to a contractor. We are investigating how these materials ended up in the residence, and the discrepancies in the contractor’s statements,” Torkonu said. “We are still in the early stages of the investigation, and the regional security coordinator will be in contact with authorities in Accra for further instructions.”

Evans Lartey, one of the two suspects detained, claimed to be a certified ECG contractor. “I am a meter supplier, and the ECG contacts us for meters and related materials,” he said, asserting that he had a legitimate contract with the company.

The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the source of the materials and whether the items were stolen.
