The Supreme Court of Ghana has adjourned indefinitely a case concerning the potential removal of the Chief Justice, after the Attorney General was absent from the hearing. The adjournment was granted following a request from the Attorney General, who had sought permission from the Chief Justice due to ongoing training for lawyers at the Attorney General’s office.

The case centers around an application seeking to halt the ongoing process of determining a Prima Facie case regarding petitions for the removal of the Chief Justice. Two state attorneys, including a former personal assistant to the Attorney General, requested the adjournment as a courtesy to the court.

However, Godfred Yeboah Dame, representing the plaintiff in the matter, expressed surprise at the absence of the Attorney General and his deputy, citing a training workshop for state attorneys. Dame subsequently requested the case be postponed to Monday, April 14.

The plaintiff in the case is challenging the president’s decision to consult the Council of State about determining a Prima Facie case without first consulting the Chief Justice, arguing the move is unconstitutional. The court, led by Justice Henrietta Mensah Bonsu, ultimately decided to adjourn the matter indefinitely.
