President John Dramani Mahama, has nominated Ebi Bright, a parliamentary candidate for Tema Central, as the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for the Tema Metropolis in the Greater Accra Region. The announcement, which comes ahead of the December general elections, has drawn protests from segments of the local population.

Ms. Bright, a familiar figure in Ghana’s political circles, will assume the high-profile municipal role pending approval by the Tema Metropolitan Assembly. Her nomination is grounded in Article 243 of the 1992 Constitution and the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended in 2017.

Ludwig Totimeh has also been named Municipal Chief Executive for neighboring Tema West, a role similarly requiring ratification by the local assembly. Both appointments are seen as part of a broader strategy by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to consolidate influence in key urban constituencies.

A full list of other nominated MCEs was released in a statement accompanying the announcement.
