Ghana’s Chief of Army Staff isn’t mincing words when it comes to the spiralling violence in Bawku.

Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu issued a sharp warning on Wednesday to those behind the unrest in the conflict-hit town, declaring that any further attacks on civilians or military personnel will be treated as acts of extremism — and met with decisive force.

“Your days are getting numbered,” he said during a press briefing after touring the troubled area in the Upper East Region. “Any attack on innocent civilians or military personnel will be considered an act of extremism and will be met with the full strength and resolve of our forces.”

The Army Chief’s message was unequivocal: there will be no safe haven for individuals inciting violence. He emphasized the military’s determination to hunt down and bring to justice anyone contributing to the chaos.

“We will pursue every individual involved. And justice will be served,” he said.

Major  General Gbetanu also turned his attention to the region’s youth, making a heartfelt appeal for peace. “Lay down your arms, return to the path of peace. Your future does not lie in bloodshed but in building, learning, and growing your country.”

Earlier in the day, the Army Chief visited the Kusaug Traditional Council, urging traditional leaders to work with security forces and help calm rising tensions. He stressed that cooperation — not confrontation — between local leaders and the military was key to restoring order.

This marks Maj Gen Gbetanu’s first official visit to Bawku since taking office, and his message couldn’t have been clearer: peace is the only path forward.
