In a bold move to streamline passport services and make them more accessible to Ghanaians, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced a sweeping set of reforms that will take effect from April 28, 2025. The changes, which cover everything from tech upgrades to price cuts, mark one of the most significant overhauls of the country’s passport system in years.

Here’s what’s changing:

  1. Chip-Embedded Passports Replace Biometric Ones – Say goodbye to the old biometric system. Ghana is upgrading to chip-embedded passports, promising enhanced data security and alignment with international standards.
  2. 24-Hour Passport Service – Urgent travel plans? No problem. A new express system will allow applicants to get their passports within 24 hours.
  3. Doorstep Delivery via Courier – The days of waiting in long lines are numbered. Applicants can now opt for home delivery of their passports.
  4. E-Tracking for Applications – Real-time tracking is coming. Applicants will be able to monitor the status of their passport requests from submission to delivery.
  5. 30% Slash in Application Fees – In a move bound to be welcomed by many, passport application fees will drop from GHS 500 to GHS 350.

At a press briefing in Accra on April 23, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa underscored the government’s commitment to security and accessibility.

“We’re ensuring that Ghanaians get the best of both worlds—affordable services and secure travel documents,” he said.

Officials say the reforms are part of a broader effort to modernize public services and meet the growing demand for international travel.

Whether you’re a student heading abroad or a professional prepping for your next business trip, the new passport policies are designed to make your journey smoother, faster, and cheaper.
