The  government has launched a new initiative to provide free sanitary pads to schoolgirls nationwide, in a move aimed at promoting education and improving menstrual hygiene.

Unveiled in Accra on Thursday, the Free Sanitary Pad Initiative brings together ministers, education experts, and school representatives, all committed to addressing the challenges many girls face during menstruation.

The programme forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s broader agenda to advance gender equality and ensure that no child is left behind in accessing quality education.

Speaking previously during his State of the Nation Address, President Mahama highlighted the impact of menstruation-related stigma and lack of resources on girls’ school attendance, calling for urgent action to eliminate such barriers.

The initiative is expected to ease the financial burden on families, reduce absenteeism among schoolgirls, and improve their overall well-being.

Supporters of the scheme say it could play a key role in closing the gender gap in education by ensuring girls stay in school and reach their full potential.
