The Chief Executive Officer of Ghana’s Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, has announced that he will not approve a renewal of the government’s contract with sanitation services company Zoomlion Ghana Limited under its existing terms.

In a strongly-worded Facebook post, Mr Basintale expressed concern over what he described as “unfavourable conditions” in the long-standing agreement, particularly the salary structure. He revealed that Zoomlion workers currently earn GHC250 (approximately $17) per month—an amount he said is unacceptable.

“For seven years and nine months, the NPP renewed the Zoomlion contract in its current state, paying the Ghanaian youth/worker GHC250,” he wrote, referring to the New Patriotic Party-led government under President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Mr Basintale, appointed under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government led by President John Mahama, promised to halt any extension of the deal unless significant changes are made.

“I promise on my honour, as I stand by the grave of my late father, not to renew the contract in its current state or form,” he said. “It is evil for the previous government to have committed to this and I shall stop it.”

He added that he would not accept such wages for any member of his own family and could not, therefore, accept it for other Ghanaians.

The YEA boss said the Mahama administration is committed to improving worker welfare and ensuring that every Ghanaian is paid fairly for their labour.
