A mobile money agent was shot and killed in Ghana’s Volta Region on Monday evening during a brazen armed robbery, the latest in a string of violent incidents targeting financial service operators across the country.

The victim, identified as Christopher Ahordo—widely known by locals as “Colombo”—was closing his business in the Gbagblakope area near the Diamond Cement Factory in Aflao when two armed men approached him around 6:15 p.m., according to local journalist Sylvia Awumey. The assailants, dressed in long robes and with their faces concealed, reportedly brandished pump-action shotguns before seizing a bag believed to contain cash.

As the suspects fled the scene, one of them discharged a round into Ahordo’s chest, killing him instantly. Witnesses said they were unable to intervene or render aid due to indiscriminate gunfire from the assailants as they escaped into nearby brush.

Ahordo, who typically closed his mobile money kiosk by 5:00 p.m., was working later than usual for reasons that remain unclear. His body was later recovered by local residents and transported to the Ketu South Municipal Hospital mortuary. Municipal police have launched an investigation.

The incident adds to a growing list of deadly attacks on mobile money agents in Ghana, a country where digital financial transactions have become deeply embedded in everyday commerce. Several similar robberies—some fatal—have been reported this year in the Ashanti Region and beyond.

Law enforcement authorities have yet to announce any arrests related to Monday’s killing.
