Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Kennedy Agyapong has pulled out of the party’s ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing concerns over the safety of his supporters following a violent incident in Kumasi.

Mr Agyapong’s decision comes after a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was stabbed during a clash at a gathering in the Bantama area. The student, a member of Unity Hall’s Jama group, had been contracted by Mr Agyapong’s campaign to perform at the event, held at the Pentecost Church.

Sources close to the politician say tensions flared when a wealthy associate of Mr Agyapong handed money to the performers. Shortly after, a group of armed men, allegedly linked to the NPP, stormed the venue and seized the cash. The incident escalated into a confrontation, with gunshots reported and one member of the Jama group sustaining stab wounds.

The injured student was taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and is currently receiving treatment.

Mr Agyapong’s team has filed a formal complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, the former Member of Parliament announced his withdrawal from the tour and pledged to pursue justice for the victim.

“Because of what happened yesterday, my team and I want to pull out because lives are threatened,” he said. “I don’t think I can protect my team enough. So we want out so that Dr Bawumia can do his campaign.”
