Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to assist with inquiries into an alleged assault involving a police officer during a recent protest.

His appearance follows a formal request submitted to the Speaker of Parliament, according to a statement from the Ghana Police Service.

The incident is said to have occurred during the ‘Save the Judiciary Demonstration’ held in Accra, where tensions between demonstrators and security personnel escalated. Footage shared on social media appeared to show a physical altercation between Mr Afenyo-Markin and a uniformed officer, prompting widespread public attention and political commentary.

In a further development, police confirmed that a parallel investigation has been opened after Mr Afenyo-Markin filed a petition alleging he was assaulted by the officer in question.

“Both investigations are ongoing,” the police statement said. “The public will be updated as the case progresses.”

The Ghana Police Service has pledged to ensure that the investigations are conducted with fairness and impartiality.
