Afua Asantewaa, a Ghanaian media personality and vocalist, has fallen short in her second bid to break the Guinness World Record for the longest individual singing marathon, after record officials invalidated the attempt over rule violations.
In a statement issued by Guinness World Records (GWR), the organization said the attempt did not meet the stipulated guidelines, particularly regarding rest periods, a core requirement for record validation. Participants are permitted a five-minute rest break for every continuous hour of singing—a rule Asantewaa’s team breached on two separate occasions.
GWR identified two critical infractions: at 23:25 during sequence 19, Asantewaa took a 15-minute rest break, exceeding her five-minute allowance. Later, in sequence 21, she paused for 105 minutes, despite having accumulated only 10 minutes of eligible rest time.
“These deviations from protocol compromise the integrity of the attempt and therefore disqualify it from consideration,” the GWR statement read. The organization emphasized the need for fairness and consistency across all record attempts globally.
Despite the setback, Asantewaa remains upbeat. In a public statement, she acknowledged the disappointment but described the experience as transformative. “Exploring my potential on the Guinness World Records platform has brought about growth, discovery, and life-altering experiences,” she said, thanking her supporters across Ghana and beyond.
She also extended her appreciation to her sponsors, including Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as well as her corporate partners and management team.
While this marks her second unsuccessful attempt, Asantewaa signaled no intention of retreat. “This journey is far from over,” she affirmed.
Her previous attempt in late 2023 also fell short of recognition, though it garnered widespread national and diaspora support, positioning her as a cultural figure of resilience and ambition in Ghana’s entertainment landscape.
