The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) reported no casualties following a heavy downpour that swept through the capital on Sunday, disrupting daily activity and prompting emergency responses across several municipalities.

According to Mohammed Jafaro, Chief Disaster Control Officer at NADMO, the agency fielded numerous distress calls from residents in areas such as Adenta, Tema, and Kaneshie—neighborhoods particularly vulnerable to flooding. “We received many calls for assistance, which led to the dispatch of emergency response teams,” Jafaro said in an interview with Channel One Newsroom. “As of now, we have not recorded any fatalities.”

Flooding in Accra, often worsened by poor urban planning, remains a recurring challenge. Jafaro cited inadequate drainage infrastructure, widespread sanitation issues, and engineering defects in several districts as key factors behind the persistent flooding. “Some communities lack proper drainage. Others are overwhelmed by accumulated waste,” he noted.

NADMO is urging residents to exercise caution, avoid low-lying areas during heavy rain, and adhere to safety advisories as the city braces for additional rainfall in the coming weeks.
