A British woman has been arrested at Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport (KIA) after allegedly attempting to smuggle more than 17 kilograms of cannabis onto a flight to the United Kingdom.

The passenger, who was travelling on British Airways flight BA 2066 from Accra to Gatwick, was found with a suitcase containing 32 slabs of suspected cannabis. Field tests conducted by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) confirmed the substance to be cannabis, with a total weight of 17.72kg.

She has since been handed over to NACOC headquarters for further investigation.

The arrest comes in the wake of a separate drug bust on 18 May, involving another British national who arrived in Accra from Thailand via Dubai on Emirates flight EK 787. Authorities discovered 92 slabs of cannabis, weighing 53.6kg, concealed in two suitcases.

Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of two additional suspects—a customs officer and an airport porter from the Commercially Important Person (CIP) section—believed to have assisted in the smuggling operation.

The back-to-back incidents have raised concerns over a possible increase in drug trafficking attempts through Ghana’s main international airport. Authorities say the developments highlight ongoing efforts by NACOC, airport security, and law enforcement agencies to clamp down on narcotics smuggling.
