Three people have been confirmed dead following heavy flooding triggered by torrential rains in the Adentan Municipality of Accra.

Municipal Chief Executive Ella Esiman Nongo told l Citi FM on Monday that the fatalities occurred in separate communities — Lakeside, Nanakrom, and New Legon — after nearly three hours of continuous rainfall on Sunday afternoon.

“In Lakeside, we lost two people, including a four-year-old girl at Nanakrom, and a gentleman around New Legon,” she said.

The storm, which began around 15:00 local time, overwhelmed key stormwater channels, including the Odaw drain, and submerged roads across several parts of the capital. Areas such as Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adenta-Dodowa, and Tema were also badly affected.

Emergency teams rescued several stranded residents, particularly in the Ashiyie area. However, Ms Nongo warned that many low-lying communities remain vulnerable due to poor drainage and unchecked urban development.

“Because people are building on waterways, there is no exit route for the water when it rains,” she explained.

The MCE called for tougher enforcement of building regulations and immediate structural interventions to address the recurring flooding problems in Accra.

“If we don’t tackle the indiscipline in our building practices and enforce the rules, these tragedies will keep recurring,” she said.

Sunday’s floods highlight the capital’s ongoing struggle with drainage infrastructure and the growing human toll of unregulated construction. Authorities are expected to begin assessments and coordinate relief efforts for those affected in the coming days.
