One person is feared dead, and three security officers have been injured following violent clashes during a demolition operation at Gomoa Dominase in Ghana’s Central Region.

The incident occurred on Wednesday during a joint operation by the Gomoa East District Security Council and the Central East Regional Police Command. The exercise aimed to remove squatters from an area behind the Dominase Onion Market, believed to be a hideout for criminals responsible for recent armed robberies along the Kasoa–Winneba Highway.

According to local authorities, a young man—yet to be identified—was found bleeding and unresponsive inside one of the structures earmarked for demolition. It is believed he may have attempted to re-enter the building after being instructed to evacuate. His condition sparked outrage among the squatters, who launched an attack on security personnel and assembly officials.

Described by locals as “ghetto boys”, the squatters used cutlasses, stones, and sticks in the assault. They also prevented efforts to transport the injured man to hospital. In the ensuing chaos, two police officers and one immigration officer sustained injuries. They were initially treated at local medical facilities before being transferred to the Police Hospital in Accra for further care.

The attackers also vandalised two heavy-duty machines belonging to the District Roads Improvement Programme and shattered the windshield of a police vehicle.

Authorities say drugs and weapons were found in the possession of some squatters earlier in the operation, prompting the decision to demolish the structures. As tensions escalated, security forces were forced to retreat and later fired warning shots in an attempt to restore order.

Six suspects were arrested during the operation.
