A former chairman of Ghana’s Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, has pleaded not guilty to charges linked to the failed $2 million Accra Sky Train project.

He appeared before the High Court in Accra on Monday, where he was granted bail set at GHC10 million (around $680,000), with two sureties required to be justified.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi is accused of wilfully causing financial loss to the state, conspiracy to commit a crime, and the intentional dissipation of public funds.

He is standing trial alongside Solomon Asamoah, the former chief executive of GIIF, who has also denied the charges.

The trial, which had faced earlier delays due to medical concerns raised by Ameyaw-Akumfi’s legal team, centres on the alleged unauthorised release of $2 million in state funds for a proposed light rail project in Accra.

The government had announced plans for the Sky Train project in 2019, but no construction work was ever carried out.

The Attorney General’s office is leading the prosecution, alleging both men were involved in the mismanagement of public funds.
