Military personnel have been deployed to the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, following the arrest of a top regional figure from the opposition New Patriotic Party .

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi and the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, was taken into custody after voluntarily appearing before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to assist with an undisclosed probe. His arrest quickly drew large crowds of NPP supporters and party executives to EOCO’s offices in Accra, demanding answers and access to their colleague.

The growing crowd prompted authorities to dispatch military personnel to secure the area and prevent any potential clashes. As of Tuesday evening, EOCO had not released any formal statement regarding the basis for the arrest, fueling political speculation and accusations of partisanship.

“This situation is unfortunate. Denying access to our own Regional Chairman without justification raises serious concerns,” said NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, speaking to reporters outside EOCO’s premises. He condemned what he described as “political intimidation disguised as law enforcement” and warned of a forceful party response.

The arrest and the government’s handling of the incident have deepened partisan friction in Ghana, where political fault lines are increasingly visible ahead of the upcoming general elections. The NPP has indicated it will resist what it views as politically motivated attempts to undermine its leadership.

EOCO has so far declined to comment on the nature of the investigation involving Chairman Wontumi, leaving the legal and political implications of the case uncertain.
