Ministry of Education on Wednesday announced the renaming of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho to honor former President John Evans Atta Mills, a key figure in the university’s founding.

The institution will now be known as the Professor John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu said during the inauguration of the university’s newly constituted Governing Council in Accra.

The move, according to the ministry, recognizes the late president’s instrumental role in establishing the university and his broader contributions to advancing health and education in the country. President Mills, who passed away in office in 2012, is widely credited with championing public health infrastructure and expanding access to tertiary education during his tenure.

“The renaming reflects the enduring legacy of a leader who placed national development through education and healthcare at the core of his presidency,” Mr. Iddrisu said.

Governing Council Chair Prof. Kodzo Gavua welcomed the announcement, stating that the university would continue to uphold the ideals of academic excellence and public service associated with its new namesake.

The renamed institution—Prof. J.E.A. Mills UHAS—remains a premier center for training healthcare professionals across West Africa, offering programs in medicine, nursing, and allied health sciences.
